According to an Elizabeth Police Department spokesman, a police officer shot and killed a pit bull on three-lined Fernwood Terrace after the dog bit its owner more than 20 times.

The New Jersey News reported that the victim, an 18-year-old Elizabeth woman, was in her bedroom during the dog’s first attack. Her pet suddenly went crazy and attacked her. She managed to fight her way outside of the house until someone saw the incident and called the police.

A detective on an off-duty job near the scene responded to the incident. He saw the pit bull attacking the woman on the front yard of her house. When the detective attempted to rescue the woman, the dog turned on him. He shot the dog twice, causing the death of the victim’s pet.

After the incident, the victim complained she had no feeling in her arm and could not move any of her fingers. She was then rushed to Overlook Medical Center in Summit for immediate treatment.

The spokesperson said that the pit bull was once abused by its previous owner and was rescued.

While any dog has the potential to bite humans or other animals, American Pit Bull Terriers are among the deadliest of all dog breeds due to their thick skulls, powerful jaws, and muscular legs. Pit bulls consist only of 2% of the dog population, yet they are cited as being responsible for about a third of all deadly dog attacks in the U.S.

Despite their aggressive in-bred traits and homicidal history, the pit bull dog breed are widely popular as companion dogs in many American cities. In many dog attacks involving pit bulls, police officers had to shoot and kill these dogs in order to subdue them after attacking humans or other animals.
