A pit bull bit the leg of a 13-year-old boy and drove him to escape up a tree along with a 15-year-old boy. A police sergeant responded to the scene and shot the dog dead at P.J. Hill Elementary School.

Police report says that two loose pit bulls ran toward the school’s playground on 1000 block of Ease Estate Street at about 2:30 pm and attacked two boys. One of the dogs bit one of boys. The boys climbed up a tree to keep themselves safe.

When two Trenton police officers arrived, they saw the aggressive dogs trying to get the boys. The officers yelled at the pit bulls to distract them. The dogs ran toward the fence to get the officers. One officer standing near an unlocked school gate shot one of the pit bulls twice and the other dog ran away. The shot animal was killed at the scene.

The bitten boy was treated at the scene. The other dog was caught by Animal Control officers and investigated whether the animals have registered owners. As per department policy, the Internal Affairs will investigate the police sergeant’s discharge of his gun.

Only a few breeds of dogs out of approximately 600 breeds are thought to be dangerous. Many dog experts consider the pit bulls and the breed’s derivatives as the most dangerous and aggressive dogs. Due to their selective breeding as fighting dogs, they pose such a danger to other pets and humans.

What makes these dogs unique is they often don’t usually communicate a warning to their victims before attacking. Most other dog breeds generally warn victims before they attack as shown in their bared teeth and aggressive growling. With pit bulls, victims are often left clueless before being attacked.

Pit bulls are very strong and possess jaws that are capable of creating a 235-pound biting force. They often attack by surprise, their bite penetrates the victim’s deep muscle and they shake the victim once bitten to inflict further damage. Their bite is the worst among dog bites because of the combination of their biting technique, force of jaws, shaking of their head and their locking bite. They usually don’t let go of their victim until severe damage is inflicted.

The quality of a pit bull’s bite was exhibited in a courtroom in Ohio when the county’s dog warden showed a video of a pit bull hanging from a bitten steel cable even when it was tranquilized during the bite.  It showed that the unconscious pit bull didn’t let go of an object and tightly locked it in its jaws despite the absence of mental stimulation.
